Canon Point:
Is your character Dead, Undead or Alive: Undead. Technically.
History:
Long before the beginning of the story, Andrew John Pryce married Louisa Valencia in the south carolina colony. Their plantation burned down and left them penniless - taking up with the McGraw Carnival show using their former education to entertain. On her death bed Louisa confessed to her husband that she set the fire as an attempt to kill their newborn son. She had met a man in the woods who had left her full with his child. Distraught, Pryce drank himself to death and the boy grew up raised by the carnival.
Fast forward to 1936, Brian Pryce, handsome, young - a mere child. His parents are carnies - his father running the ferris wheel and his mother is one of the kootch dancers. Growing up in a tight-knit magical family, he adores working in the carnival and is even developing feelings of puppy love for his best friend Callista "Callie." The daughter of the pitchman. Callie dreams of getting away while Brian would be perfectly happy to stay forever and marry her. The two share a first kiss when he announces he's going away and he promises to take her with him. He goes to work, deciding to practice his pitch just as he meets a mysterious man in the carnival.
Taking him to the games he realizes he's satan
Satan's come for the carnival owner
owner fled
since the carnies are in contract to him, and the carnival is left as collateral, Satan now owns the carnival
Everyone becomes darker more demonic version of themselves
Satan says be grateful for the boy
boy's mother and father flee with Callista (in his mind.) In reality the carnies tear them apart.
Satan unofficially adopts him. Makes him a cambion, says it's in his blood.
Personality:
Brian is born and bred Carny, almost a stereo-type. It's not intentional, when the act drops he's a sensitive guy who just likes sitting and being asleep or reading Steinbeck but even that is beginning to seep away thanks to the deal that he made on behalf of the carnival. He struggles with that, ironic that his mother and father had wanted him to get away so rapidly but now that poison is seeping into his soul. It doesn't show that often, it shows in fits and starts and hesitation, but it's almost as if the devil himself lives inside him and makes him wonder - is it real? Is this gentle man who likes to read real or is he just a pitch that he sells to the occasional woman that he takes for a ride on the carousel?
He retreats into the stereotype just to get away from that. He's slick, smooth, constantly selling himself to others and watching people for weaknesses. When he finds them he exploits them. Tired? Take a load off and let me just sit and tell you stories. Hungry? Have some cotton candy, patented cotton candy thank you very much. Sure to those who are sharp he might come off as abrasive or annoying, but he'll be instantly contrite and slip away to try and entice others. He's no dog, begging you for attention - he's a cat man. He'll make you come for it and he knows enough minor tricks - slight of hand, magic, hypnotism, as well as a few actual magical tricks. He's had quite a bit of time to study folk magic after all.
Does he love? Is he capable of real honest love? No. Between not knowing if his emotions are real he can't trust himself. He's open to trysts and even in his world - even with the rebirth of Maggie who fled the carnival - he can't love her as he is and was. He is the distant son of the devil who is in effect a Cambion, restored to his full abilities thanks to the absolute stupidity of Pat McGraw and the Magic and Mystery Carnival.
